Fixing common Mailchimp errors on Zapier

Zapier integrates with Mailchimp, one of the best email marketing tools on the market. It allows you to collect email addresses with embeddable signup forms, manage mailing lists with powerful tagging options, and makes it easy to create and send newsletters with their design tool and pre-made templates. It's one of Zapier's most popular integrations.

In this guide, we're going to summarize some common errors and issues and what you can do about them.

1. "Invalid Resource - [email address] looks fake or invalid, please enter a real email address."

The issue here should be pretty obvious - Mailchimp thinks the email address is fake for some reason. It's usually pretty accurate, picking up on common mistakes like "google.co" and "google.con". Sadly, there's not much that can be done with this one, however it's useful to get the error alert (which will include the offending email address) and you'll probably be able to work out the real email address and add it manually.

2. "Member In Compliance State - [email address] is in a compliance state due to unsubscribe, bounce, or compliance review and cannot be subscribed."

Again, this one is self-explanatory. You're trying to add someone to your list that has previously been on one or other your lists and unsubscribed, bounced or hit the spam button in their inbox (that's what they mean by compliance review). It means it will be impossible to add this person to your list, even manually.
